Gary Regina builds music in real time. He plays a phrase on saxophone, loops it, adds guitar, loops that, layers percussion, beatboxing, flute, and vocals, until the room is full of sound that no one can quite believe is coming from one man.
This is not a backing track. Every layer is created live, in front of the audience. The effect is something between wonder and disbelief.
His In The Loop project spans world, funk, jazz, and trip hop. Seven albums. Forty-plus years performing. The company he has kept includes Miles Davis, Earth Wind and Fire, John McLaughlin, the Neville Brothers, and the Yellowjackets.
Gary Regina was born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island. He studied at Berklee College of Music before relocating to Santa Cruz in 1982, where he became a founding voice in the San Francisco Bay Area World Beat movement with his band Special Fun, and one of the first musicians to embrace solo looping in the 1990s.
He has played venues from the Concord Jazz Festival, the San Jose Jazz Festival, and the Monterey Jazz Festival to the Superdome in New Orleans, Marians Jazz Room in Bern, Switzerland, and the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. He plays the Santa Cruz Looping Festival every year and has headlined it.
His current focus is his In The Loop project, layering guitar, percussion, beat boxing, saxophones (sometimes two at once), EWI, flutes, recorders, penny whistles, and vocals across world, funk, jazz, and trip hop. Seven albums under his own name on all streaming platforms.
Based in Nevada City, California. Available for drivable engagements across Northern and Central California.
